It is proudly said that Malaiyaha Tamils have a history of 200 years in Sri Lanka. But, even though we have fourteen Grama Niladhari divisions in this area we still have the same four feet rooms as houses. In the same line houses, we are still living as a society that has been experiencing various sufferings such as inadequate sanitation, inadequate educational facilities, economic problems, poverty, lack of opportunity, child abuse, child labor, drug distribution, etc.
My “anxiety” has reached its peak as a young Malaiyaha Tamil who finds that we are still living in a society where a man dies and there is no land to bury him. We are ruined by politicians who are not trustworthy. Our leaders do not know what are basic needs or fundamental changes. The final result is only disappointment.
It is a pity that our elders and forefathers have trusted those politicians who come during elections and then disappear without even giving us addresses. If someone dies here, one has to get proper permission from the manager to remove the tea saplings and make a 6 feet deep pit in the tea plantation land. Even if we have to build a house by our own efforts, to build a toilet or even to repair the house, we are required to get permission. Even though sometimes we get permission we can’t own the houses. Thus the unspeakable miseries continue.
